Cry of the Gull
by afrai

* * *

Sometimes Legolas goes to the shore.

The salt in the wind tastes of beyond. The waves uncurling, an endless horizon, and Legolas aches with the brokenness of the world.

Middle-earth is dying with every minute that passes. Legolas never realised this until he felt its heartbeat in the tides. He sees it in the sunken eyes of once-young faces, in the slow silvering of a friend's beard.

When the seagulls come, he lifts his hands and they surround him like the blessing of oblivion. Their cries are furious joy and when wings brush his face he can believe in eternity.
